the last dance
friday night my dad, mom, my friend Sarah and I all piled into the our Odyssey van and headed 50 minutes away to to watch Chalice in her second (and last!) dance recital at Parkside Highschool in Salisbury. She was only in one dance--the one in the photos--which was the 23rd dance of the night. So i watched every daughter, sister and niece (even aunts and mothers!) in the town perform for the first hour and a half before i got to see my own little sister take the stage. all the girls were very strong dancers; very fluid and graceful. the costumes and the music were beautiful. It amazed me how many dancers there were on stage and still had such ease and grace and impressive choreography.

so now chalice must take a break--a forced, uninvited, unwelcomed break--from dancing. No summer intensive camps like she planned, no classes every day of the week, no pointe until the end of the summer. Doctor said her ankle is doing poorly and needs rest. chalice says all ballerinas have foot pain--thats life! tough! she's a dancer and her ankle doesn't deserve rest, it should just keep dancing and put up with the pain! ballerinas are hardcore, people. don't be fulled by the tutus and ribbon and silky shoes.

now chalice can hang out with me and be normal like me and be home in the evenings with me. she'll be a normal, everyday person for three whole months (well maybe more like two and a half) and i'm gonna soak it up.

(chalice is the one up on her toes, second from the right.)

and i don't mind being not normal as long as it's the good kind of not normal and not the bad kind.
